A Message from CAP’s 2012/2013 Board Chair

Dear CAP Colleague,

As the new CAP chair, it is a great pleasure to introduce myself to the membership. I am Dawn Spaar, Associate Dean at Elizabethtown College’s Center for Continuing Education & Distance Learning, located in Central Pennsylvania. I have been with Elizabethtown since 1999, have attended CAP conferences since 2005, and have been o­n the CAP Board since 2009. I met some of you at this year’s CAP Conference in Denver and at previous CAP events, and I hope to personally connect with each of you in the coming year.

It is with honor that I follow in the footsteps of our most recent chairs, Patricia Ellis and Royce Ann Collins – who during their tenure advanced CAP to be fiscally self-sustaining, developed the Quality Standards for Accelerated Programs and Model for Good Practice, continued with national meetings and events and advanced CAP’s consulting services to mention o­nly a few critical endeavors.

Rest assured, during 2012-2013, I plan to continue along the same path. You’ll notice immediately that CAP enters this next year with a new name: The Council for Accelerated Programs. The 2011/2012 CAP Board agreed that CAP has officially graduated from a Commission to a Council. We welcome this coming year with enthusiasm about our new name coupled with an expanded service base for members. During this year’s annual conference I asked, “What can CAP do for you?” The answer is broad. CAP can provide many services specifically dedicated to accelerated programs including consulting services and program evaluation, webinars, presentations, promoting the Quality Standards, regional workshops, the annual conference, and providing networking opportunities and professional connections. In fact, some upcoming events include a regional workshop at Keuka College October 8 & 9 that will focus o­n “Promoting Student Success: o­ne Adult at a Time” and will carry with it a spin o­n Financial Aid. We are also very excited to join the Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana (CALL) to offer a two-part webinar series, scheduled for October 23rd and November 27th, that will address two practical topics for faculty: Rubrics & Rigor and How to Accelerate a Traditional-Length Course. CAP Board Members will be presenting and representing CAP at the annual ACHE and CAEL conferences in November, and we have consulting visits planned at a few colleges this fall.

As a reminder, you will receive a full report that will include not o­nly suggestions for improvement but also reaffirmation of your current good practices. What better way to highlight your program/s in preparation for an upcoming accreditation visit or strategic planning discussion?

For those who attended our 2012 annual conference recently held in Denver at Metropolitan State University, it was great seeing you. We hope you enjoyed the great plenary speakers, high-quality roundtables, fantastic networking opportunities, and excellent weather in downtown Denver. For those of you who were unable to join us, we hope to see you at an event throughout the year or at next year’s annual conference. Stayed tuned for more details.
